The Sims 3….

Posted in WTF! on June 18, 2009 by B. KiDdo

Before I continue I’ll start by saying this is my initial reaction to playing the game. After playing the game a couple of days ago for the first time, here’s what I thought.

There’s still a lot that I haven’t been exposed to game play wise, but so far I have mixed feelings about the game. There’s certain things I like and certain things I feel needs work. As was mentioned before by many people, the animations need work. They are definitely not fluid at all. They kind of have a clunky feel to them. Especially the walk it kind has this hunch over pissed off vibe going on. I don’t know if has anything to do with the traits my sim has or what?

I love the fact that they can go out into town without a loading screen. But i felt some what cheated because when they drive or ride their bike into town, you can’t see them entering or exiting the cars or getting on and off the bike. It just feels too mechanical. Seriously EA, you couldn’t take out 30 mins of your day and recycle the getting into vehicle animation used in the Sims 2? At least give us that.

I love the camera controls. I think they are more versatile than before. The lighting is decent, I like the fact that you can colorize indoor lighting. That’s great for filming and story telling without the use of a lighting mod. I like that you can give your sim traits that’s pretty cool, and for the most part it’s fairly easy to keep your sims happy. I’m glad they continue to let us use the “testingcheats” especially now when there’s not many hacks right now.

All that greatness aside, it’s seems somewhat impossible to play multiple families. I noticed each family you start is like starting a new game if this were a console system. I thought story progression was a good idea however i didn’t count on the fail that tends to leak out at EA. I ended up not liking story progression, mostly because it almost feels like your main sim is stuck in the time warp, where he steps outside his best friend has toddler, when the day before he had no children at all. And where’s the kid’s mother? I noticed a lot of one parent homes popping up randomly as each day went on. But all is good let’s just disable the story progression function, oh wait! You can’t, because for some strange reason it won’t disable. Don’t get me wrong, story progression seems like a great premise for a story or film, the sim wakes up and the outside world has aged 10 years. But not so much if i want to just play the game.

The facial expressions are cool, and the more i look at the sims in this game, the less I want to bash their ugly faces in with a shovel. I mean their looks are growing on me. They do seem to be a little bit more natural looking I guess. After I spend about 45 mins in CAS, i tend to come out with a sim doesn’t make me cringe. It would be nice if they had more hair options. I guess they spent most of the time creating their spiffy new outside locations that you can’t enter. There are a few places that you can follow your sims in. Like the gym, and the….yeah…… It would be cool if you can go to a resturant, grocery store, or the movies with your sims. Instead of waiting outside like the getaway car in a bank robbery gone wrong. But they can go to the beach, and to the park and they can fish now too!

The outside world is beautiful, they definitely did a good job with creating every last detail of Sunset Valley, down to the very light breeze you can see blowing on all the plant life in your game. In fact i think they may have spent too much time on that, and less time on the actual Sims. Maybe they should have just came out with a new game called The Neighborhood?

I personally think they could have done a lot more if they prolonged the release again. Maybe start creating new animations instead of recycling sims 2 animations. Work out some of the kinks, maybe strive to release glitch free game at least once in their life time. And what’s up with the nuclear launcher? Now every little picture you snap is imediately attached to the launcher, and now if you get patches and updates you have to do it through the launcher or EA’s Fail download manager? Yikes, and don’t forgot the random crashing at the loading screen that happens whenever you try to launch the game via the launcher. At least that’s what happened to me, I had to bypass the launcher completely, now the problem is solved.

I probably won’t be playing this game that much. Maybe when i start seeing more custom content popping up. I might create a short, with it. I love the fact that the challenge of creating movies is back. With The Sims 2 it became so easy thus making it boring after a while. So far the films I’ve seen outside of advertisements or videos created by EA, have been really good. So I may try some machimina with the sims 3, i won’t rule that out. So yeah I have mixed feelings, it’s not a completely bad game, it just needs a little work. I can predict a few expansion ideas that might start surfacing based on what you can currently do with the game now. Let’s just hope those expansions won’t destroy the very fragile system it’s installed on.

So WTF Vimeo?

Posted in WTF! on May 23, 2009 by B. KiDdo

So this whole thing with vimeo has really annoyed me a bit.  I decided to do a little investigative work as to what the HELL! they are doing on this site.   I thought maybe since they had the no gameplay video rule; that maybe they were saying no to all machinima as well.

NOPE!

My hypothesis was proven wrong by one of the Vimeo admins Blake Whitman, who on July 21st, 2008 made a written statement regarding the no gameplay rule.

He ends his blog post by addressing the plan for machinima videos.

Which reads:

2) I make Machinima films! It’s not the same thing! Am I banned?

We currently do not feel that Machinima films fall under the category of gaming videos described above and, therefore, assuming compliance with our sites general terms & conditions, we will continue to accept such videos on Vimeo. We are not, at this time, banning films that fall into the Machinima genre.

So again I ask the question…..WTF Vimeo?

you can read Blake’s entire blog post at this address:
Vimeo Blog

As for now, I’ll just continue to wait and see what happens and if they’ll ever respond to my emails.

In case anyone was wondering…..

………….where’s my vimeo page or why the embeded videos on my blog are missing?

Today I received an email which read:

Dear Joga Kidd:

Your account has been removed by the Vimeo Staff for violating the Rules of Vimeo.com

Reason: Uploading game walk-throughs, game strategy videos, depictions of player vs player battles, raids, or other videos that simply depict individuals playing a video game.

We hope you find a video host more suited to your needs. If you believe this was an error, please reply to this email in a civil manner with your reasoning (”I see other people do it” is not a valid reason).

Excuse me while i go sort this out….or hunt for another place to showcase my vids…….. oh fuck it
I am going to go lay down and get some rest. I’ll deal with this crap later.

Cheers.

Brave New World

Posted in Machinima on May 13, 2009 by B. KiDdo

So over the last few weeks, I’ve taken a break from Second Life a bit.  To clear my head, and think of new ideas.  Lately, the best way for me to do that has been quest grinding in WoW (World of Warcraft) for hours, while listening to music.  I decided a couple of nights ago to attempt to film something in WoW again.  I think my first time shooting in WoW I was all over the place, it was a hot mess!

Anyway this time around I decided to produce something a little bit more simple, yet I still think I was able to showcase some of the beauty in the locations of the Azeroth and Outland.  So I basically recorded all my flight paths and cut them together lol.  When I first started playing WoW I think what made me fall in love with the game the most was the beautiful locations in the game, and the vastness of the world itself, and that’s what i wanted to showcase in this film.

After cutting everything together and watching numerous times I think my only complaint was some of the camera movements were a bit jerky as i was flying around.

What I feature in this film is only a thumbnail of all the other places that can be found and explored in WoW.  (I didn’t even film Northrend lol)

For the music I chose Joga which I’ve used before in past films. It’s one of my favorite songs ever and for me it worked really well with the images.

Don’t look for this video on youtube it can only be found on my vimeo page.

Now this is where I head back to work before my co-workers catch me blogging lol.

Tales from Behind the Scenes

Posted in Machinima on April 15, 2009 by B. KiDdo

Now that I’ve gotten some rest (in other words drank 3 red bulls and one espresso)  I can now do a little write up for Mad People, as I said I would in my last post.  I’d like to start by saying that this project probably would still be in the gutter, if it had not been for the inspirational sim that is Jabberwocky.

jabberwockly

When I was working on this project last year, a thing that I felt was lacking the  most for me was that there was no setting at all.  Everything was shot inside my photobox studio with a black background.  So sometime last month after taking a long break from Second Life  I started to wander around the metaverse like I normally do, and I happened to just explore Jabberwocky that night.  The last time I really explored this place, there was still a lot work still being done since it was new at the time.  That night I was exploring the tunnels,  and I was just amazed by how wonderful everything is turning out.  Surrealia (Jovial) really did an amazing job with all the cool stuff she added since I’d seen it last.  So figured this place would have been a great back drop to that video I’d trashed a year ago.  I still hadn’t made up my mind to finish it yet.  Fast forward a week later I was sorting out my external drive and deleting really old files I didn’t need, when I happened upon the old render clips I didn’t realize were still saved on my drive.  So I watched them, and that’s when the buzzing in my brain started and I said to myself, “I need to finish this project”.   And that’s just what I did folks.

It wasn’t as easy as just starting up with all the footage and re-shooting a few filler scenes here and there.   A few problems I encountered were 1. I had deleted everything I previously shot, 2. the previous concept had failed me, and 3. I couldn’t remember all the props I had used previously.   So I basically started from stratch again. I reshot everything, there were a 2 stock clips I ended up using during my final edits, but everything else was completely new footage.  The concept I had previously was a personification of the Tarot  into bondage/fetish theme.  This concept did not work out so well initially because for one there were too many cards to feature within the time allotted and some of the cards didn’t translate well into the theme.    However there were a few cards that after I had edited them the first time, I was completely amazed at how well they turned out.  And I ended up using those same characters and I added new ones as well.

The Star – one of my favorites from my first attempts

image81

Wheel of Fortune – also from my first attempts

image10

The Chariot -  an unplanned representation, many thanks to Surrealia for creating this animation

image111

The Lovers – another favorite from my first attempt

image12

The Hermit – also from the first render however this version came out better.

image14

Justice – new character,  also unplanned i happened to be shopping and i saw the outfit, my initial thought was ” Woot leather daddy cop!”

image13

The Tower – it was first represented as a human in the first attempt but this time it is the location at which the mad people live.

image15

The Hanged Man – another first attempt character

image0

Judgement (The Angel)  and The Devil – both are new characters, initally i was going to just use the Judgement character alone, however I decided it would be much more interesting to have the Devil in this scene as well.

I used these Tarot representations because to me  the images are so expressive. Whenever I would look at a real tarot card I would always enjoy the story and the meanings of each image .   I wanted to create that feeling as well with these characters.  I gave it the bondage element because I wanted to showcase these same Tarot images but in a non conventional way.  However in the first video I made it clear, that these were Tarot cards, but this time around not so much.  I left it obscure because,  I felt  these images where strong enough on their own, without me having to put a label on them.  For the concept this go around it was a little different and once again this is where  Jabberwocky inspired me again, and the quote from Alice in Wonderland,  “but I don’t want to be among mad people”;  I wanted this video to put the viewer among “the mad people”, however  these mad people are garnished with my own personal touch.  I also wanted to take it out of the realm of Alice, and make it seperate.

Well here’s a little closer look at my thought processes on making this film.  Until next time…….

Oh the MADNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was thrilled to finally have some free time in my life, but i was even more thrilled to dig deep into the vaults and resurrect a project I had left high and dry a year ago. And this is where insert a detailed back story of the video, why I originally canned it and why i decided to bring it back.  But i am not going to do that just yet, for one I’m too friggin’ tired and its 2am in the morning.   I just wanted to post this blog before i forgot to do it.

So once I’ve gotten some sleep I’ll write up something real nice about this and post pretty pictures and all that jazz, until then I hope everyone enjoys it.

Posted in Machinima on April 13, 2009 by B. KiDdo

Greetings! As some of you may know, Ninhead of sims machinima fame recently launched his own channel on Justin.tv.  The channel features machinima goodness from numerous creators in the community.  I had the pleasure of viewing and this channel numerous times throughout the week and Saturday I was able to share some of my own creations as well.  I really enjoy participating in this, for me it somewhat  restored the sense of community I came to love, when i first started this hobby a few years ago, plus i got see a lot of old favorite videos that haven’t seen in ages.  I encourage anyone involved in machinima whether it be sims, second life, movie storm or whatever to participate in this.   The channel airs at 10pm EST, and here’s the link and if anyone is interested in sharing their work just contact Ninhead directly, if you don’t have any contact info for him, he’s available to chat with directly on the actual channel during broadcast hours.

Re-Working

Posted in Machinima on February 16, 2009 by B. KiDdo

Over this past weekend I decided to re-work the opening sequence of my series. I mainly did this because I learned that it was muted by Youtube.com for using the song The Remedy by Abandoned Pools.  So instead of complaining about how much Youtube sucks I decided exercise some creativity or alleviate boredom.   I rather enjoyed working on this, and I decided to incorporate some after effects graphics in this.  And I am happy with the finished product, to me it seems much cleaner, than the previous version and I like the text better as well.

I may add changes to it as the series progresses, but for now you can view it here.

After Effects Helps the Gloomies

Posted in Machinima on December 1, 2008 by B. KiDdo

Greetings, if you happened to glance at my page on youtube you might know that I released a new video yesterday. I wanted to talk about it a for a bit and also showcase it on my blog as well. (Since I have a blog I might as well use it more!)  Thanks to Jovie, I was introduced to some very helpful and very awesome tutorials for After Effects. And after a long period of punching Mr. Bunny in the stomach and crying over my missing happy cake, i finally felt energize to do something.

So I spent about a week studying some of the cool tricks you can do in AE and figuring new tricks on my own.  I created this little video which i feel is more a test video and not so much a master piece releasing.  I still love it don’t get me wrong, but I mainly wanted to see how AE graphic effects would look when combined with SL footage.  I barely used Vegas for any video effects like i normally do, all the colorizing was done in AE, along with my logo graphic at the beginning.

Actually i think the two worked pretty good together, seeing how a couple of shots were created in a room that was completely made in AE, with the character keyed into the shot.  The inspiration for the particular style was brought to my attention by this old apple ipod nano commercial where you see light streaks moving with the dancing.

Just so happens one of the tutorials i found teaches how to go about recreating that same effect, although its not exactly the same but it still looks close to how the graphic designers contracted by Apple did it.

Since I’m all about sharing the knowledge and not hording information for myself, if you go to www.VideoCopilot.net you’ll find a bunch of free tutorials including AE basic knowledge stuff. It’s very helpful also a gold mine if you are hip to the business like myself and you are aware of how incredibly expensive it is to learn how to use AE let alone acquire the software.

Cheers.

Updating…

Posted in Machinima on October 11, 2008 by B. KiDdo

So it’s been a while since I last made an entry.  Tonight I decided to clean out all the junk in this blog, so some of you guys will probably notice that the drama post are gone.  I think thats one reason why I stopped posting because i didn’t want my blog to consist of that.

Lately I have been logging into second life more, just trying to get inspired.  I find that keeping inspiration these days has been a struggle. After 3 years of this I find myself burnt out.  There was a time where I used to be able to complete the projects I start, but now I am finding myself trashing a lot of ideas.   But don’t worry I am not throwing away my series, i am just trying to take it one step at a time at the moment. I hope to continue with it once I begin to feel it as I did when i first started.  The hardest part about a series is not the filming after all.  It’s the finishing.  At least that’s what I’m discovering.
